Serial, the Peabody Award-winning true crime podcast narrated by journalist Sarah Koenig, returns to the airwaves for Season 3 on September 20, Variety reports. But fans of the first two seasons.
Although S-Town is indeed connected to Serial, it is not Serial Season 3. In fact, the podcast is being narrated by Brian Reed instead of Sarah Koenig. The podcast is, however, the first official spinoff series of Serial, created by Serial Productions. If you’re wanting to listen to Serial, though, you’re going to have to wait quite a while. The premiere of Season 3 might not be until 2018.
S-Town was inspired by a message from an Alabama resident, according to the podcast’s website. The resident, so far known only as “John,” asked a reporter to investigate a wealthy family’s son after he bragged about getting away with murder. Some have guessed that victim being investigated is John Willie Smith, who may have buried $100,000 in gold right before he died.
As for Serial, the podcast hasn’t been canceled. And despite so many public complaints about Season 2, Telegraph reported that Season 2 actually had more viewers than the first season. The last episode had 50 million downloads. So the third season will definitely happen, and apparently it will focus on a murder mystery again. But the premiere date for the third season is the subject of debate. Telegraph recently reported that Season 3 will premiere this summer. However, this isn’t likely accurate. Esquire just reported that Season 3 won’t likely premiere until 2018. Esquire’s estimate is probably correct, since the update came from an interview with Julie Snyder, producer of Serial. Snyder said the podcast was delayed because of the team’s work on other podcasts, like S-Town.
True crime podcast Serial has captivated audiences around the world since its debut, often taking the number one spot in the podcast charts.
We found out everything you need to know about what the podcast’s creators are up to including a new spin-off debuting March 28.

What can we expect from S-Town?
A post shared by S-Town Podcast (@stownpodcast) on
Just like Serial’s first season, S-Town revolves around a murder, this time in Alabama.
The podcast’s website says: “John despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks a reporter to investigate the son of a wealthy family who's allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But then someone else ends up dead, sparking a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man's life.”
This time, it’s not Sarah Koenig’s lyrical voice walking you through an elaborate mystery: S-Town is hosted by Brian Reed.
Some reports speculate that this case will surround the death of John Willie Smith, an Alabama resident believed to have buried $100,000 worth of gold shortly before he died, though we shall have to wait for the show’s premiere to find out exactly what’s going on.
How can I listen to S-Town?
Unlike Serial, for which we had to wait a week or two between episodes, S-Town adopts a Netflix-style model, with all episodes in the series available simultaneously from March 28.
It can be listened to via the Podcasts app on iPhone, or Android users can access it using Stitcher or RadioPublic.
What happened in season one and two of Serial?
Season one looked into the 1999 murder of 18-year-old Hae Min Lee and at how her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was convicted of her killing.

Over the course of 12 episodes, Sarah Koenig trawls back through all the court documents, police interrogations, trial testimony, and talked to everyone she could find to discover a case far more complicated than the one first presented to the jury.
In a change of direction, season two looked into the story of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, an American soldier who had been held captive by the Taliban for nearly five years.
His return to the US after being rescued by a US Special Operations team in a Black Hawk helicopter in May 2014 by President Barack Obama, though reaction to his return was not as positive as you may first expect as some soldiers from his unit accused him of walking off their outpost in Afghanistan into hostile territory.
Koenig found out his side of the story and why he did it.
What’s happened to Adnan Syed and Bowe Bergdahl since?
Serial brought international attention to both men and the cases they were involved with.
Though he was initially serving a life sentence for Hae Min Lee’s murder, Adnan Syed has since had his conviction vacated and has been granted a retrial, thanks partly to evidence discovered during the making of the podcast.
Judge Martin P. Welch who made the ruling said that Syed’s lawyer Christina Gutierrez “rendered ineffective assistance when she failed to cross-examine the state's expert regarding the reliability of cell tower location evidence”.
He currently remains in custody awaiting his new trial.

Sgt Bergdahl currently faces a court-martial for desertion and endangerment charges, though his lawyers attempted to appeal when President Donald Trump was sworn into office.
On the campaign trail, Donald Trump had called Bergdahl “a dirty rotten traitor”; once Trump became president, Bergdahl’s defence team argued that it would now be impossible to guarantee him a fair trial.
The motion was denied on March 23.
What do we think season 3 is going to be about?
The podcast’s creators are tight-lipped on this though if current rumours are to be believed, it looks as though this series will return to murder.
It’s thought that some recording of this took place alongside season two, with Koenig spotted at an Ohio murder trial in 2014.
The triple murder in question resulted in gang violence and retaliatory shootings.
Listeners will have to wait until summer to be certain though.
